An island in the Izu Islands that belongs to the Oshima Branch Office of Tokyo. There is one island and one village with an area of 4.12 square kilometers. The island is a troide-shaped volcanic island with steep slopes, with Mt. Miyatsuka (508 meters) at its center, and the settlement is located on the foreshore on the northern slope of the mountain. There is no groundwater and the people live entirely on rainwater. Approximately 60% of the island is covered by camellia forests, and it is the source of high-quality camellia oil, but the area has been in decline recently. Agriculture, forestry, and fisheries are all in decline. There are regular ships that call on the island from Tokyo, Shimoda, and other places. Population 284 (2009).
