A city facing the Pacific Ocean in northeastern Iwate Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It is the terminus of the Hachinohe Line and the Sanriku Railway Kita-Rias Line. The city center developed as a castle town for the Kuji clan and a post station on the Hama-kaido road. It is rich in agricultural and forestry products such as rice, vegetables, flowers, and timber, and also has a fishing industry for sardines and seaweed. Iron sand is buried in the coastal terraces, and mining has been carried out since the feudal era, but it was closed in 1964. Kokuji ware and Kuji amber are specialty products. It is located at the northern entrance to the Sanriku Reconstruction National Park, and has many scenic spots such as Kosode Beach, the Kuji River, and the Hiraniwa Plateau. In March 2006, Yamagata Village, Kunohe District, was incorporated into the city. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 623.50 km2 . 36,872 people (2010). 岩手県北東部,太平洋に面する市。1954年市制。八戸(はちのへ)線,三陸鉄道北リアス線終点をなす。中心市街は久慈氏の城下町,浜街道の宿駅として発達。米,野菜,花卉(かき),木材などの農林産物が豊かで,イワシ,海藻類の水産業も行われる。海岸段丘には砂鉄が埋蔵され,藩政時代から採掘されていたが,1964年閉鎖された。小久慈焼,久慈琥珀を特産する。三陸復興国立公園の北の玄関口に位置し,小袖海岸,久慈川渓流,平庭高原など景勝地が多い。2006年3月九戸郡山形村を編入。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。623.50km2。3万6872人(2010)。
