A city in the Val-d'Oise department in northern France. The city's name comes from the silver (Argent) mines developed by the Celts. It is located on the right bank of the Seine, 14 km northwest of Paris, and is well connected by water, making it home to electrical, mechanical, metal and chemical industries. Argenteuil Abbey, the setting for the tragic death of Heloise and Abelard in the 12th century, was founded around 660. The fields of asparagus and vineyards, once a speciality of the city, are being transformed into industrial sites and suburban residential areas. Population: 94,162 (1990).
