Lippi, Fra Filippo

Japanese: リッピ(英語表記)Lippi, Fra Filippo
Lippi, Fra Filippo
Born: 1406. Florence
[Died] October 8/10, 1469. Spoleto, Italian painter. Orphaned at an early age and raised by an aunt, he entered the monastery of Santa Maria del Carmine in 1421, and is listed as a painter in the monastery's records from 1430 to 1432. His early works show the influence of Masaccio and Masolino da Panicale, who were the artists of the monastery's frescoes. He produced works in Padua in 1434, and from 1437 he was active in producing murals for the churches of San Lorenzo and Sant'Ambrogio in Florence. In 1442 he became abbot of the monastery of San Quirico near Florence. From around 1445 he was influenced by Fra Angelico, and in 1452 he produced the murals for the Prato Cathedral in place of Angelico. Around that time, he fell in love with Lucrezia, a nun at the Santa Margherita Monastery, and the couple gave birth to Filippino Lippi, who would later become a painter. He was known for his style of painting that combined the sublime with human emotions, and for his free-spirited private life. His major works include "The Coronation of the Virgin" (1447, Uffizi Gallery) and "The Virgin and Child with the Story of St. Anne" (1452, Pitti Gallery).

Son of the painter Fra Filippo Lippi, he worked with his father on the murals for the Spoleto Cathedral, and after his father's death, studied under Sandro Botticelli in Florence. His early works are similar to those of Botticelli, but from around 1480 he established a more individual style with bright colors. He produced many murals in Florence and Rome.
