A syndrome described by H. Cairns et al. in 1941. It is a type of coma vigil, which has a sleep-wake rhythm and, when awake, opens the eyes and appears conscious, but has no spontaneous movement or spontaneous speech. The patient can swallow food and has an escape reflex, and may follow people or objects with their eyes. This syndrome can develop into a clear state of consciousness clouding, or the patient can recover from this state after passing through it. Also, because the patient is easily able to fall asleep, has amnesia, and has incontinence, it is considered to be a special state with mild consciousness clouding.
