[Born] 123 BCE. Nursia
[Died] 72 BC. A Roman politician in Hispania. A rebel leader in Hispania. He studied law and rhetoric, and fought against the Gauls twice, in 105 BC and 102 BC. He was a praetor in 83 BC. He supported G. Marius, and was pursued by L. Sulla, and fled from Hispania to Africa. He gained the popularity of the Lusitanians, and revolted, and controlled almost all of Hispania from 80 to 77 BC. He opposed Rome by contacting the Mediterranean pirate and Mithradates VI of the East, but he intended to rebel against the Sulla faction rather than against Rome itself, and in Hispania he acted as a Roman general, winning the support of anti-Sullan Romans and Italians. He always carried a white fawn with him, showing that he was under the protection of the goddess Diana, and won the hearts of the people, but after 76 BC he fought against Pompey (Pompey the Elder), and was defeated in 74 BC. He gradually lost popularity and was assassinated.
