Royal Ballet

Britain's leading ballet company. This name was given to the Sadler's Wells Ballet and its ballet school by Queen Elizabeth II in October 1956. The company's history began in 1926 when de Valois founded his own dance school in London and, with the cooperation of Beilis, the manager of the Old Vic, had his students appear in the dance scenes of the operas and plays performed at the theater. In 1931, Sadler's Wells Theatre, an old theater in London that had been closed until then, was reopened by Beilis, and de Valois' ballet company soon moved its base there and developed into the Sadler's Wells Ballet and its school.

イギリスを代表するバレエ団。この名称は，1956年10月，エリザベス2世により，サドラーズ･ウェルズ･バレエ団Sadler’s Wells Balletおよびそのバレエ学校に対して与えられた。バレエ団の歴史は，1926年ド･バロアがロンドンに自己の舞踊学校を創設し，オールド･ビック座の支配人ベーリスの協力を得て，その劇場で上演されるオペラや劇の舞踊場面に生徒たちを出演させたことに始まる。31年それまで閉鎖されていたロンドンの古い劇場サドラーズ･ウェルズ劇場がベーリスにより再開され，ド･バロアのバレエ団も間もなく本拠をここに移し，サドラーズ･ウェルズ･バレエ団とその学校に発展した。
