A town in Tosa County in northern Kochi Prefecture. Established as a town in 1970. Occupying mountainous land in the upper reaches of the Yoshino River, rice cultivation is thriving, especially in the river valley. Timber is also abundant. Sameura Dam was constructed in 1973. 高知県北部，土佐郡の町。1970年町制。吉野川上流域の山地を占めるが，河谷を中心に米作が盛ん。用材も多産。1973年早明浦(さめうら)ダムが建設された。平石に乳イチョウ（天然記念物）がある。212.13km2。4358人（2010）。
