[Died] November 25, 1854. Abbotsford. British biographer. Born in Scotland. At a young age, he became a contributor to Blackwood's Magazine, where he was nicknamed "The Scorpion" for his harsh criticism. In 1820, he married Sophia Scott, daughter of W. Scott. From 1825 to 1853, he worked as an editor for the Quarterly Review. After Burns (1828), he wrote the famous Memoirs of the Life of Sir Walter Scott (1837-1838). Although this biography contains some distortions of the facts, it makes full use of the benefits of having lived with Scott for five years. He also wrote several novels, including Peter's Letters to his Kinsfolk (19), which depicts the social circles of Edinburgh and Glasgow at the time. He is also known for being one of the first to acknowledge Wordsworth and Coleridge, and for his criticism of Shelley and Keats.
