Cecil, R. (English spelling) CecilR

…British politician. Graduated from Cambridge University. He started as clerk of the common law courts in 1547, became a member of Parliament, and served as secretary to the regent, Duke of Somerset, during the reign of Edward VI. After the Duke's downfall, he was briefly imprisoned in the Tower of London, but returned from 1550 to 1553, and was knighted in 1551. He skillfully avoided the Catholic backlash that followed under Queen Mary, and escaped unscathed. After Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne in 1558, he served as Chief Secretary until 1572, and as a seasoned politician, he shaped the domestic and foreign policies of the time. …
