A town facing the Tsugaru Straits in Kamiiso District, Hokkaido. The Hokkaido Shinkansen and the Dounan Isaribi Railway run through the town. Part of the lowlands downstream of the Kikonai River have been used for rice paddies since the Edo period. The town is also home to aquaculture, dairy farming, and forestry, as well as abalone, sea urchin, kelp, and scallops. The town suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. Area: 221.87 km2 .
