Decamps, Alexandre Gabriel
Born: March 3, 1803, Paris
[Died] August 22, 1860. A French painter from Fontainebleau near Paris. He belonged to the Romantic school, and was a representative of a group of painters known as Orientalists because they sought subject matter in the Eastern world. Apart from a short period of studying under A. Pujol at the age of 15, he studied painting on his own. In 1827 he traveled to Asia Minor, and produced exotic works after returning to Japan. In 1831 he exhibited "The Night Watch of Smyrna" (Metropolitan Museum of Art) at the Salon, where he gained popularity. After traveling to Italy from 1832 to 1833, he produced historical and religious paintings. He later lived near Paris, and belonged to the so-called Barbizon School. He was also famous as a painter of animals, such as dogs and monkeys.
