The river originates in the Brazilian highlands near Brasilia, flows north, joins the Araguaia River, and empties into the Atlantic Ocean west of Belem. It is 2,750 km long. There is a road that runs along the river connecting Belem, Brasilia, and São Paulo. The upper reaches of the river are planned development areas for agriculture and mineral resources.
