[The popularity of English landscape gardens]
French gardens were quickly imitated by other European countries, but in the 18th century, a completely contrasting new trend in gardening emerged in England and became popular throughout Europe, even leading to the conversion of existing famous gardens into these styles. These new gardens are generally referred to as "landscape gardens," and just as Italian and French gardens made good use of the unique geographical features of their respective countries, they were based on the idyllic landscape of England's gently undulating hills.
