Seedbed - Naedoko

Japanese:
Seedbed - Naedoko

A field for growing crop seedlings. Intensive management is possible in a seedbed, so young plants can be protected from pests, diseases, drought, low temperatures, and weeds, and growth can be regulated by artificially insulating or heating the seedbed or shading it. In addition, genetically or acquired inferior individuals can be selected out. A seedbed for flood irrigation of rice, rush, etc. is called a nursery, while a place for growing flower, fruit, and forest tree seedlings is called a nursery. There are various types of seedbeds, but they can be divided into open beds, cold beds, and hot beds based on the temperature control. (1) Open beds are part of cultivated land used as seedbeds, and no special temperature control is performed. Seedbeds for leafy vegetables and nurseries for seedlings are included. (2) A cold bed is made of glass or vinyl and is kept warm by solar heat. Examples include protected rice seedling beds, ordinary vinyl greenhouses, vinyl tunnels, and frame cold beds for leafy vegetables. (3) A hotbed is an artificially heated seedbed. Examples include warm-heated hotbeds filled with manure, electric hotbeds with electric heating wires, and hotbeds that use hot air or steam generated by oil or propane gas, or that use hot spring heat. The most common type of bed is a framed bed, and depending on the height of the bed, there are ground beds, flat beds, raised beds, and other types. Recently, seedling boxes have been used for rice, and vegetables and flowers are also grown in seedling pots as well as in boxes. Seedling bed structures vary from large glass rooms and vinyl greenhouses to vinyl tunnels and small frames for home use.
