An oil made by low-temperature (below 400°C) dry distillation of resin-rich coniferous wood, especially pine with dense roots. The yield is 15-20%. It has a specific gravity of 0.95 or more and does not contain any fraction below 100°C. It decomposes at 250-350°C, releasing carbon dioxide. It is a dark brown oil, acidic, and has a distinctive odor. It is used as a raw material for turpentine, creosote decomposition liquid, and anhydrous pine root tar, as a solvent, paint, resin soap, etc. It is widely produced in Sweden, and was also produced in Japan at the end of World War II.
