Wolsey, Thomas

Japanese: ウルジー(英語表記)Wolsey, Thomas
Wolsey, Thomas
Born: circa 1473, Ipswich
Died: November 29, 1530, Leicester. English clergyman and politician. He was said to have been born to a butcher. He entered the priesthood and was accepted at the court of Henry VII and then Henry VIII in 1507. He was appointed Privy Councillor in 1511, Archbishop of York in 1514, and Cardinal and Lord Chancellor in 1515. After he became Lord Chancellor, he gradually gained control of all departments where the king and the Privy Council issued official orders. He used his other ranks and powers to amass great power in his own right, and played an active role as Henry VIII's right-hand man, contributing to the improvement of England's international status. However, he fell from grace after failing to obtain permission for the king's divorce from the Pope, was arrested for treason, and died of an illness on his way from York to London. Hampton Court Palace and Whitehall Palace were built by him.
