The central Mediterranean Sea. It borders the southwestern Balkan Peninsula to the east, Sicily and the Calabrian Peninsula to the west, and the Strait of Otranto to the north, leading to the Adriatic Sea. English name: Ionian Sea. Old name: Mare Ionium (Latin). The ancient Greeks called this sea the Sicilian Sea, and the name Ionian Sea became common after the Roman conquest. The water gets deeper as you go south, and its deepest point is 4,594 meters south of the Peloponnese Peninsula. The Ionian Islands line the west coast of the Greek mainland in the eastern part of the sea area, and this area has relatively high rainfall, so fruit cultivation is thriving, and olives and wine are exported. Since ancient times, this sea area has been important for east-west transportation in the Mediterranean, and the route from Corfu (Corkyra) across the Strait of Otranto to the southern coast of Italy was frequently used by Greek colonists in the mid-8th century BC. 古称マレ・イオニウムMare Ionium(ラテン語)。
