One of the Turkic languages. Spoken by approximately 6.77 million people (1989) in the Republic of Azerbaijan (west coast of the Caspian Sea) and over 8 million people in northwestern Iran. It is closely related to Turkish in the Republic of Turkey, and can be spoken to a fairly high degree. There are four dialects in Azerbaijan, but the orthography is based on the eastern dialect centered on the capital, Baku. From the 11th century until 1929, it was written in Arabic-Persian characters, but then it was converted to the Latin alphabet, which continued until 1939. After that, it was written in Russian characters (Cyrillic), and then the Latin alphabet was adopted. The grammatical structure and word order are very similar to Japanese.
