...A deciduous tree of the walnut family that grows in sunny, slightly dry areas (illustration). It is also known as Nobu-noki and Doku-gurumi. The leaves are odd-pinnate and alternate. The leaflets have narrow, pointed tips and sharp sawtooth edges. The bases of the lateral leaflets are highly asymmetrical. The flowers bloom around June, and after the leaves unfold, numerous catkins gather at the tips of the new branches. At the bottom are male inflorescences, which are yellowish-green and long and slender, rising obliquely. The female inflorescences are at the tips, and usually the base is female, but the upper half is dominated by male flowers. The flowers have no perianth, and the male flowers have stamens lined up in the bract axils, while the female flowers have wing-like bracts and fused pistils in the bract axils. ...
