Kyogaku Shiyosho - Kyogaku Shiyosho

This is the diary of Kyokaku, the 18th head priest of Daijo-in Temple, Kofuku-ji. It is also called An'ijidono gojiki (Autobiography of An'ijidono). The National Archives of Japan has 65 volumes of the Hinamiki (Diary of the Days) and 16 volumes of the Bekki (Additional Notes). Although some parts of the Hinamiki are missing, they span the years from 1415 (Oei 22) to 1472 (Bunmei 4). The additional notes include the Yuimae Chokushi Hikitsuke (Diary of the Imperial Envoys from the Vicarage), the Tandai Nikki (Diary of the Investigation of Other Temples), the Noto Iwai Ryogo Suisui Ki (Record of the Water Supply of the Two Rivers of Noto), the Kofuku-ji Sogo Bunin (Record of the Appointment of the Sogo Bunin of Kofuku-ji), the Hosorogi Goshimokata Hikitsuke (Record of the Appointment of the Chief Priest of Kofuku-ji), the Daisojo Ichizasenji (Record of the Appointment of the Chief Priest of Kofuku-ji), the Yuimae Ki (Record of the Appointment of the Chief Priest of Kofuku-ji), and the Muromachi Palace Nara Goko (Record of the Appointment of the Chief Priest of Kofuku-ji). Kyokaku was appointed as the head priest of Kofuku-ji four times. The descriptions cover everything from temple affairs and the control of temple lands at Kofuku-ji Temple to the trends of local Yamato people and the political situation in Kyoto, making it an important historical source for research into politics, economics, and society during the turbulent period leading up to the Onin War.
