Torinji Temple

Japanese: 東林寺 - とうりんじ

A temple located at the northwest foot of Mount Lu in northern Jiangxi Province, China. This ancient temple was built at the end of the 4th century by the Eastern Jin monk Huiyuan with a donation from Huan Yi. It was built in opposition to the Xilin Temple where Huiyong lived. After Huiyuan founded a nembutsu association called the White Lotus Society in front of the Amida statue at this temple with 123 comrades, it became the main training center for Pure Land Buddhism in China, and was frequently visited by high priests and literati. Even today, the name of Amida Buddha is inscribed at the mountain gate, and there is the Sansho Hall where a statue of Huiyuan is enshrined, and the Nembutsu Hall surrounded by large cypress trees. 中国，江西省北部の廬山の北西麓に位置する寺院。東晋の僧慧遠（えおん）が，桓伊（かんい）の寄進で，4世紀末に建てた古刹。慧永の住した西林寺に対した。慧遠がこの寺の阿弥陀像の前で123人の同志と〈白蓮社〉という念仏の結社を創設して以後，中国における浄土教の根本道場となり，高僧や文人墨客がしきりに訪れた。今も山門には南無阿弥陀仏の名号を掲げ，慧遠の像をまつる三笑堂や槙の大樹に囲まれた念仏堂がある。【礪波護】
