Shumushu [island] - Shumushu
The northernmost island of the Kuril Islands. Japanese name: Shimushu Island. Russian territory. 230 km2 . The entire island is a plain, with the highest point at 190m above sea level. It faces the Kamchatka Peninsula across the 12km-wide Shumshu Strait. During the Meiji period, Shigetada Gunji and others worked hard to develop it, and it was a fishing base for the northern Kuril Islands during the Japanese occupation.
