A tower-shaped telescope used primarily for spectroscopic studies of solar radiation. A coelostat at the top of the telescope guides the solar radiation underground through the tower, where it is broken down into a spectrum by a spectroscope. The focal length of the imaging system is 10 to 15 meters, and the radiation is dispersed to more than 1 mm per 1 Å, making it possible to study the fine structure of the spectrum. The tower telescope at the Potsdam Observatory in Germany, built to measure the redshift of the solar spectrum due to the general theory of relativity, is particularly famous and is known as the Einstein Tower.
