This refers to the dual ruling system of brothers and sisters (princess and hiko) that existed before the establishment of ancient nations. In clan society based on blood ties, brothers and sisters from the same mother had particularly strong ties. This was because it was believed that sisters had spiritual powers to protect their siblings. This relationship can be clearly seen in the Okinawan Onarigami faith that still remains to this day. Based on this relationship, a ruling system was created in which brothers and sisters shared political and religious ruling power. Typical examples of this are seen in the joint ruling system of Himiko and her brother in the Yamatai Kingdom, and the ritual system of Itsuki no Hafuriko and her priest brother at Kamo Shrine.
