A full-length novel by American author Vladimir Nabokov. Published in Paris in 1955 (banned the following year), it became popular among tourists, and when it was published in the US in 1958, it immediately became a bestseller. Humbert Humbert is attracted to the beauty of his stepdaughter Dolores Hayes (Lolita), and drives his wife to a suicide-like car accident, embarking on a love escapade with Lolita across the US. However, Lolita escapes along the way. Humbert tracks down Quilty, who stole her from him, shoots him dead, and is imprisoned, where he reminisces about his love. The result is Lolita, a story of longing for beauty, perverse sexuality, and voyeurism (Bayerism), a mixture of reality and fantasy. Words such as nymphet and Lolita complex were born from this novel.
