A coalfield located in the northwest of Hokkaido, west of the Teshio Mountains. The Showa, Uryu, Toyohira, Yoshizumi, and Haboro coal mines were developed and prospered, but all but Yoshizumi closed between 1969 and 1971. Yoshizumi Mine was a small-to-medium-sized mine, but it was mainly made up of low-cost outcrop coal, and was sent by truck to the Sunagawa thermal power plant, where it was used as fuel for power generation for a while, but is now closed.
