A perennial plant that is worshipped as a sacred herb by Hindus, especially Vaishnavas. Ocimum tenuiflorum L. (= O. sanctum L.), a species of basil in the Lamiaceae family, is called sacred basil or holy basil. It branches out well, grows 30-60 cm tall, and the base of the stem can become woody. Its leaves have a minty fragrance and are used as a herbal medicine, such as for cough suppressants. It often grows in sandy soil, but believers build sand mounds or stone pots in their gardens or bathing areas and offer puja to the plant planted there every day.
