?‐604 Augustine was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, known as the "Apostle of England." He was sent to England by Pope Gregory I to convert the Anglo-Saxons, and with the patronage of King Ethelbert of Kent, he built a cathedral and monastery in Canterbury. The seeds of the gospel planted by Augustine blossomed throughout England after the union of the Celtic Church and the Church of Rome was established at the Synod of Whitby in 664.
