This is a salt-salted shell mound from the late/final Jomon period located in Gochu, Ikawazu, Atsumi-cho, Atsumi-gun, Aichi Prefecture. It is semicircular, measuring 180m east to west and 60m north to south. It is located on a beach ridge-like rubble bank about 2m above sea level, facing Fukue Bay, in the southwest of the Atsumi Peninsula. About 1km west of the same rubble bank is the Kitayashiki shell mound from the middle Jomon period. Eight excavation surveys have been carried out since 1903, mainly for the purpose of collecting human bones, and a total of more than 134 human bones have been excavated. In addition to evidence indicating accidents and conflicts, such as a bone with a percussion hole made by a stone axe on the top of the head and a bone with a stone arrowhead driven into the ulna, human bones with cut marks reminiscent of cannibalism have been excavated.
