Bleached - Bleached
The title of a piece of music for the koto and shamisen. It refers to a piece of music with a theme depicting the scene of cloth being bleached by exposing it to river water. There are several pieces with the same title, and today they are distinguished as follows: (1) Jiuta "Sarashi" (Sarashi), included in the 1685 edition of the annual publication "Onusa." One of the works "Edo Asari Kengyo Sayama Kengyo Kyo Asatsuma Koto Tofu Hikidashite Shinkyoku." (2) Jiuta "Furu Sarashi" (Furu Sarashi), included in the 16th year of the Genroku era (Matsu no Ha). Written by Kitazawa Koto. A long song piece. (3) Jiuta "Shin Sarashi" (Shin Sarashi), composed by Fukakusa Kengyo. A tegotomono piece. Perhaps it is an adaptation of (2). Currently it is also simply called "Sarashi." It is performed with "Okuri-chi" and other pieces. (4) Koto piece "Hayazarashi" (Hayazarashi), an ensemble of (3) and a melody in the style of alternating hands. It is performed in Kyoto. (5) Yamada-ryu koto piece "Sarashi," composed by Onagi Kengyo. (3) transposed to a koto piece in Katakumoi style. "Ji" is also included. (6) Yamada-ryu koto piece "Shinzarashi," composed of (5) and shamisen, and developed from the improvisational play of both the koto and the shamisen. The shamisen piece was arranged by Nakanoshima Shosei I, and the koto piece by Yamase Kengyo III, rearranged by Imai Keimatsu, and the current arrangement is a compilation of the above arrangements by Nakanoshima Kinichi. (7) A general term for dance pieces that have "sarashi accompaniment" in the instrumental part. Sarashi accompaniment is a transposition of the interlude part of (3). It is used in the dance form of "Nunozarashi." It is found in the Nagauta piece "Echigojishi," etc. It is also used as an interlude in the kabuki kagebayashi.
