Vietnamese living in the southern tip of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in China. Population: 10,500 (1990). Formerly known as the "Yue people", they adopted their current name as their official name in 1958. Their ancestors are said to have traveled north from Vietnam along the coast in the 16th century and settled in what is now the Tonkin Gulf coast. The oldest existing document records that in 1511, people who were shipwrecked from Hai Phong built a shrine to the village's guardian deity and founded the village. Their language is Vietnamese, and they formerly used Chu Nom. Due to their long history of exchange with the Han Chinese, most of them also speak the Cantonese dialect and use Chinese characters. Their main occupation is fishing, but they also farm and produce salt. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
