There is no custom of eating snails in Japan, and it is said that they were only used as medicine for epilepsy in children. In contrast, snails have been eaten since the Mesolithic period in North Africa, as is known from the existence of escargot shell mounds belonging to the Capsa culture. In Europe, snails were also eaten during the Roman period, and edible snails were introduced to various parts of Europe by the Romans, with escargot cuisine developing in France and becoming established in the 17th and 18th centuries.
