An insect of the Hymenoptera family, Cynipidae (illustration). A major pest of chestnuts. Only females reproduce; males are rare. Adults are black and about 3 mm long. They emerge once a year in June or July and lay eggs inside the chestnut axillary buds. They overwinter as young larvae, and the following spring, when the larvae begin to develop, the buds swell and become galls. Some galls can reach a diameter of 1 cm or more and contain several larvae. Galled buds prevent leaves from developing, so if there are a large number of infestations, this can affect chestnut production and even cause the entire tree to die.
