It is a method of automatically adjusting wages according to the cost of living index, profit index, etc., but usually means a method of adjusting wages, pensions, etc. according to the price and cost of living index (instead of the consumer price index). Today, it refers to raising the amount of social insurance benefits, especially pension benefits, in response to increases in prices (cost of living) and wages. Currently, the National Pension Act, Employees' Pension Insurance Act, etc. state that if the national consumer price index created by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications exceeds or falls below the price index of the previous year in which the most recent benefit revision measure was taken, the amount of the relevant pension benefit from April of the following year will be revised based on the rate of increase or decrease (National Pension Act, Article 16-2, Employees' Pension Insurance Act, 34).

生計費指数，利潤指数などに応じて賃金を自動的に調整する方法をいうが，通常は，物価・生計費指数 (これに代って消費者物価指数) による賃金，年金などの調整方法を意味する。今日では，社会保険の給付，特に年金給付について物価 (生計費) や賃金などの上昇に対応してその額を引上げていくことをいう。現在，国民年金法，厚生年金法などでは，総務省作成の全国消費者物価指数が直近の給付額の改定措置が講ぜられた前年の物価指数をこえ，または下がるにいたった場合においては，その上昇し，または低下した比率を基準として，その翌年の4月以降の当該年金たる給付の額を改定する (国民年金法 16条の2，厚生年金保険法 34) こととなっている。
