Died: August 14, 1908. Berlin. German philosopher and pedagogue. Became an assistant professor at the University of Berlin in 1878, and a professor there in 1893. He was influenced by B. Spinoza, I. Kant, G. Fechner, and W. Bundt. He considered ethics to be the foundation of philosophy, and took an "activist" stance against formal ethics. In pedagogy, he took a position of practical learning, and had a great influence on the German education world and education system. His main works are Geschichte des gelehrten Unterrichts auf den deutschen Schulen und Universitäten vom Ausgang des Mittelalters bis zur Gegenwart (2 volumes, 1885-96), System der Ethik (2 volumes, 89), and Einleitung in die Philosophie (Introduction to Philosophy) (92).
