Tokaido Shinkansen

Tokaido Shinkansen
This high-speed standard-gauge line was built to alleviate the saturation of rail transport on the Tokaido Main Line of the Japanese National Railways (now JR). It runs between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, covering 552.6km of operating distance. Construction on the 515.4km line began in 1959, and commercial operation began in October 1964. Direct service began with the opening of the Sanyo Shinkansen in 1972. There are 15 stations along the way, including Shin-Yokohama, Nagoya, and Kyoto. The electrical system is single-phase 60Hz, 25kV, and to achieve high-speed operation of over 200km/h, the curve radius is 2500m or more, the gradient is 20‰ or less, all intersections with roads are grade-separated, no railroad crossings are provided, and automatic train control (ATC) and centralized train control (CTC) are used. The success of the Tokaido Shinkansen reaffirmed the effectiveness of rail transport in medium-distance intercity transport. Shinagawa Station opened in October 2003, and at the same time all trains were able to operate at 270 km/h, resulting in a radical timetable revision with the Nozomi taking the lead.
