Honkokuji Temple

Honkokuji Temple

This is a Nichiren sect temple located in Oiwacho, Misasagi, Yamashina Ward, Kyoto City. It is one of the four main temples of the Nichiren sect. Its mountain name is Daikozan. The principal image is the Great Mandala (said to have been written by Nichiren). It is said that Nichiren's hermitage in Matsubagayatsu was moved to Kyoto by the fourth abbot, Nissei (uncle of Ashikaga Takauji), and was named Honkokuji, but there are other theories about its origin. In the Middle Ages, it was revered as one of the 21 main temples of the Lotus Sutra in the Rakuchu Hokekyo. Its lineage was called the Rokujo school. During the Tenbun Hokke Rebellion (1536), the temple was attacked by monks from Enryaku-ji Temple and reduced to ashes, but was later rebuilt. Toyotomi Hideyoshi granted the temple 177 koku of land, Hideyoshi's sister Nisshūni worked hard to expand it, and Tokugawa Mitsukuni changed the temple's name to Honkoku-ji Temple. In 1788 (Tenmei 8), the temple was hit by a major fire, and only a few things remain, including the sutra storehouse. The sutra storehouse (built by Kato Kiyomasa, a national important cultural property) that was located north of Nishi Hongan-ji Temple was moved to its current location in 1971 (Showa 46). The temple holds the Ito Hoan-e (May 12th), Matsubagatani Hoan-e (August 27th), and Oeshiki (October 12th) ceremonies.
