Tou (rattan) - Tou (English spelling) cane palms

Japanese: トウ(籐) - トウ(英語表記)cane palms
Tou (rattan) - Tou (English spelling) cane palms
A general term for approximately 200 species of climbing palm plants, including Calamus and Daemonorops . The stems grow long, some reaching 200m, making them the longest of any seed plant. The leaves are large, 1.5-2m long, and pinnately compound, with alternate leaves. The leaflets are long and linear, with sheath-shaped bases, and the midrib and petiole have inverted thorns. The sheaths of the leaflets also have small thorns that allow them to entwine around other objects. The stems are light and elastic, and are used for rattan crafts such as furniture and walking sticks. They are produced in the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia, but rattan crafts are mainly manufactured in Singapore and Hong Kong. Wild species also grow in Taiwan and southern China.
