Horikawa

A small stream that branches off from the Kamo River in Omiya, Kita Ward, and generally refers to the area from the Ichijo Modoribashi area in Kamigyo Ward to where it joins the Kamo River in Kamitoba, Minami Ward. It was opened when Heian-kyo was built, and was used for Kyoto dyeing. Its total length is 8.2 kilometers. Horie. [1] 地を掘りうがって造った川。人工の川。※詞花(1151頃)雑下・三八五「水上のさだめてければ君が代にふたたびすめるほりかはの水〈曾禰好忠〉」[2][一] 京都市の市街地中央部を南北に流れる川。北区大宮で賀茂川から分流した小川で、一般に上京区一条戻橋付近から南区上鳥羽で鴨川に合流するまでをいう。平安京造営に際して開かれ、京染に利用された。全長八・二キロメートル。堀江。[二] 大阪市北区の東部を流れていた天満堀川のこと。※浮世草子・世間胸算用(1692)二「ほり川の材木屋の小者」[三] 愛知県名古屋市内にある運河。名古屋城西方の滝ノ口から名古屋港まで通じる。慶長一六年(一六一一)名古屋城築城の際に開削。のち尾張藩の米・材木などの運送に利用された。全長約六キロメートル。大夫堀。[四] 京都を流れる堀川の両岸に沿う道路。堀川通り。[五] 浄瑠璃「近頃河原達引(ちかごろかわらのたてひき)」の通称。[六] (五)の中の巻の称。お俊伝兵衛の心中の門出に、兄与次郎が猿回しを演じる。
