He was a leader in the American scientific community in the first half of the 19th century, who contributed widely to the enlightenment of natural sciences, including founding the American Journal of Science and Arts in 1818, writing the chemistry textbook Elements of Chemistry (1830-31), giving public lectures on chemistry and geology in various locations (first delivered in 1834), and founding and strengthening various scientific societies. His son (1816-85) also served as a professor of chemistry at Yale University. …
