Doi Bansui

A poet and English literature scholar from the Meiji to Showa eras. His real name was Doi Hayakichi (the reading of Doi was changed to "doi" around 1934). He was born in Sendai. His father was Hayashishichi and his mother was Ai. He graduated from the Department of English Literature at the University of Tokyo. While still a student, he became an editorial committee member for the magazine Teikoku Bungaku and published his works. In 1899, he published his first collection of poems, Tenchi Yujyo (Feelings of Heaven and Earth), and as a new-style masculine poet who used a lot of Chinese words, he is said to be on a par with Shimazaki Toson, who wrote feminine poems. In particular, his long poem "Stars Fall, Autumn Winds, Gojo Plains," which contains the refrain "The Prime Minister (Zhuge Kongming) treated me like an ill man," was a much-loved work. In 1900, he became a professor at the Second Higher School. In 1901, he published his second collection of poems, Dawn Bell. From 1901 to 1902, he traveled to Europe. After his third collection of poems, "Tokai Yushi Gin" (Tokai Yushi Gin) in 1904, his poetry writing did not flourish, but he produced many works of criticism and translations thanks to his extensive knowledge of both Eastern and Western literature. Today, he is generally known as the lyricist of the famous song "Kojo no Tsuki" (The Moon over the Ruined Castle) (composed by Rentaro Taki). He had a bad temper, and when he lost at shogi, he would get so upset that he would turn the board over. <Works> "Bansui Shisho"

明治から昭和時代の詩人,英文学者。本名は土井林吉(昭和9年ごろ土井の読みを「どい」と改める)。仙台生まれ。父は林七,母はあい。東大英文科卒。在学中,雑誌『帝国文学』の編集委員となって作品を発表。明治32(1899)年,第1詩集『天地有情』を刊行し,漢語を多用する男性的な新体詩人として,女性的な詩風の島崎藤村と並称される。特に「丞相(諸葛孔明)病あつかりき」のリフレインを持つ長詩「星落秋風五丈原」が愛誦された。明治33年,二高教授。34年には第2詩集『暁鐘』を刊行した。34～37年,ヨーロッパに外遊。39年の第3詩集『東海遊子吟』以後,詩作には精彩を欠いたが,東西両洋の文学に精通する博識により,評論,翻訳で多数の著作をなした。今日では一般に名曲「荒城の月」(滝廉太郎作曲)の作詞者として知られる。癇癪持ちで,将棋に負けたりすると,盤を引っ繰り返さんばかりにくやしがったという。<著作>『晩翠詩抄』
