〘noun〙① In the shogunate's legal system of the Middle Ages, a demand letter issued by a court that received a complaint from a plaintiff (appellant) to request a response from the defendant (argument). monjo. ※Goseibai Shikimoku (1232), Article 51: " In the above, two complaints and two questions are issued in a regular manner." ② By extension, to question someone about a crime. A severe interrogation that may involve torture. Examination. ※Joruri, Yoshiuji (1651), 3: "There is nothing this woman does not know. Will you question her seven or eight times and bring her down?" ③ The manner in which the questions are asked. Question. ※Ukiyo Zoushi, Seken Tsume Katagi (1767), 4: "It's all just a trivial matter now. I've come to this letter of demand to draw your attention to what you're thinking."

もん‐じょう ‥ジャウ【問状】

〘名〙① 答弁を求めるための書状。質問状。※十問最秘抄(1383)序「若(も)し賢慮、違する事あらば、かさねて問状を出ださるべしと也」② 中世、幕府の訴訟制度で、訴人(原告)が訴状を提出すると、裁判所がこれを論人(被告)に伝えて弁明を求めるために出す文書。問状御教書・問状奉書などの形式がある。といじょう。〔日葡辞書(1603‐04)〕
