Shinjugaya - Shinjugaya

Japanese: シンジュガヤ - しんじゅがや
Shinjugaya - Shinjugaya
The spherical, hard, shiny cream-colored fruits are reminiscent of pearls, hence the Japanese name Shinjugaya (pearl grass) (illustration). It is a species of the Cyperaceae family native to the tropics. The stem grows upright from a short rhizome, is about 80 cm tall, has several nodes, and bears several leaves from the center upwards. The leaf sheaths have wings. Around September, sparse panicles appear at the top of the stem, bearing male and female brownish spikelets. The fruits are spherical, about 2.5 mm in diameter, and whitish.
