In the Middle Ages, two Doso (storehouses) were appointed to handle the receipt and disbursement of the Imperial Court's money and rice tax, the safekeeping of Imperial possessions, the provision of necessary funds, and the offering of sake and food. The name remained in use into the early modern period, up until the Meiji Restoration. It may also refer to the position and status of the Doso, the Imperial Court's storehouse. As a result of the decline of the Ritsuryo government offices, certain Doso were designated to handle the major parts of the Imperial Court's finances, such as financial affairs, trust affairs, and the safekeeping of treasures, and were similar to the Kubo Gokura of the Muromachi Shogunate.
