(1) A botanical term. A pouch-like sporangium that develops after sexual reproduction in ascospore fungi. It is often cylindrical or club-shaped and produces eight ascospores inside. When reproductive cells produced in the male and female hyphae join, the two nuclei from both hyphae usually do not fuse immediately, and a binucleate hyphae called a cyst develops. Eventually, the two nuclei fuse at the tip cell of this hyphae, which then undergo meiosis to produce eight nuclei, each of which becomes the nucleus of an ascospore. The ascus usually gather in large numbers and form a mass-like structure (ascocarp) surrounded by numerous hyphae.

(1)植物学用語。子囊菌類において有性生殖の後に生じる袋状の胞子囊ascus。多くの場合，円筒形または棍棒状で内部に8個の子囊胞子ascosporeを生じる。雌雄の菌糸に生じた生殖細胞が接合すると，両菌糸に由来する2個の核はふつうすぐには融合せず，造囊糸という2核性の菌糸が発達する。やがて，この菌糸の先端細胞で2核が融合し，その後，減数分裂を経て8核となり，それぞれが子囊胞子の核となる。子囊はふつう多数集まり，それを多数の菌糸がとりまいた塊状の構造(子囊果ascocarp)を形成する。
