Innoshima City - Innoshima

Japanese: 因島[市] - いんのしま

An old city in southern Hiroshima Prefecture. Established as a city in 1953. It occupies the entirety of Innoshima Island in the Geiyo Islands and part of Ikuchi Island to the west. In the Middle Ages, it was the base of the Murakami Navy. In 1911, Hitachi Zosen's Innoshima Factory was established in Habu on the south coast, and the population rapidly increased, making it a shipbuilding city. In recent years, the decline of shipbuilding has led to diversification of manufacturing industries. The hillsides are used for citrus cultivation, especially hassaku, which is popular. The city is connected to the mainland by the Innoshima Ohashi Bridge and Onomichi Ohashi Bridge on the Nishi-Seto Expressway, and there are boat services from Onomichi, Mihara, Imabari, and other cities. Part of the city belongs to the Setonaikai National Park. ^{39.76 km2} . 28,446 people (2003). In January 2006, it was incorporated into Setoda Town, Toyota County, and Onomichi City.

広島県南部の旧市。1953年市制。芸予諸島中の因島全域と西隣の生口(いくち)島の一部を占める。中世には村上水軍の根拠地であった。1911年日立造船因島工場が南岸の土生(はぶ)に立地，人口が急増し，造船都市となった。近年は造船業の衰退で製造業の多様化が進む。丘陵斜面を利用した柑橘類，特にハッサクの栽培が盛ん。西瀬戸自動車道の因島大橋と尾道大橋で本土と結ばれ，尾道，三原，今治(いまばり)などから船便がある。一部は瀬戸内海国立公園に属する。39.76km²。２万8446人（2003）。2006年１月豊田郡瀬戸田町と尾道市へ編入。
