Sonobe [town] - Sonobe

Japanese: 園部[町] - そのべ

A former town in Funai County, central Kyoto Prefecture. It occupies the Sonobe River basin, a tributary of the Oi River. The main settlement is where the San'in Road and Sasayama Highway split off, and it developed as a post town and castle town, with the San'in Main Line passing through. The town produces a lot of rice, and is known for its chestnuts, matsutake mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and tobacco. It has been developed into an industrial site and residential area. There is Rurikei Valley (a scenic spot) on the Sonobe River. In January 2006, it merged with Miyama Town in Kitakuwata County, Yagi Town in Funai County, and Hiyoshi Town to become a city, Nantan City. Area: ^{102.78 km2} . Population: 16,207 (2003).

京都府中部，船井郡の旧町。大堰(おおい)川の支流園部川流域を占める。主集落は山陰道と篠山(ささやま)街道が分かれる宿場町，城下町として発達，山陰本線が通じる。米を多産しクリ，マツタケ，たけのこ，タバコを特産，工場地化，宅地化も進む。園部川に瑠璃渓（名勝）がある。2006年１月，北桑田郡美山町，船井郡八木町，日吉町と合併し市制，南丹市となる。102.78km²。１万6207人（2003）。
