Tenryuji Boat

Ships sent to the Yuan Dynasty to raise funds for the construction of Tenryu-ji Temple. In December 1341 (Kokoku 2, Ryakuo 4), Ashikaga Tadayoshi authorized Muso Soseki of Tenryu-ji Temple in Kyoto to send two trading ships and prepare them to depart in the autumn of the following year. Tadayoshi decided to send one of the ships first, and Soseki recommended Hakata merchant Itamoto as the tsunagi (commander in chief). Itamoto promised to pay 5,000 kanmon to the temple upon his return, regardless of the profits from the trade. The shogunate was also responsible for protecting the ships from pirates, who were rampant in the Seto Inland Sea region at the time.

天竜寺造営の費用を調達するため元(げん)に派遣された船。1341年（興国2・暦応4）12月、足利直義(あしかがただよし)は京都・天竜寺の夢窓疎石(むそうそせき)に対し、二隻の貿易船の派遣を免許し、翌年の秋に出航できるよう準備を進めさせた。直義はそのうちまず一隻を渡航させることにし、疎石は博多(はかた)商人至本を綱司に推挙した。至本は貿易の利益のいかんにかかわらず、帰国後に5000貫文を寺に納めることを約束した。他方幕府はこの船を当時瀬戸内海地方に横行していた海賊などから保護する責任を負った。
