Tenryu-ji Temple

Japanese: 天竜寺 - てんりゅうじ

Located in Saga, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, this temple is the head temple of the Tenryu-ji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. The main image is Shaka Nyorai. Ashikaga Takauji founded the temple with Muso Soseki as its founder, praying for the repose of the soul of Emperor Godaigo. It was completed in 1345 using the profits from the Tenryu-ji ship. It has suffered several fires, and the current building was built in the Meiji period, but the garden behind the abbot's chamber (a historic site and special place of scenic beauty) retains its original form and is a famous garden with a serene atmosphere. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1994.

京都市右京区嵯峨にある臨済宗天竜寺派の大本山。本尊釈迦如来。足利尊氏が後醍醐天皇の冥福を祈って，夢窓疎石を開山として開創。天竜寺船で得た利を資とし，1345年完成。数度の火災にあい，現在の建物は明治期の建築であるが，方丈背後の庭園（史跡・特別名勝）は当初の原型を残し，幽雅な趣のある名園。1994年世界文化遺産に登録。
